SPRING 2017 – MONDAY CLUBS

Green Spaces, Park Places: Grades K-2

Eco-Art/Adventures, Extensive explorations of the riches of Central Park, Riverside Park, and other neighborhood green spaces, along with museum, zoo, and other fun resources.   Children may learn to grow their own windowsill sprouts, decorate clay pots, and enjoy stories, games and other projects with some of PS87’s beloved kindergarten Afterschool teachers. Teachers include experienced 87Afterschool teacher Dawnica Conyette, PS87 School Librarian.

Monster Mash Creative Arts/Drama:  Grade K-1

Have you ever seen a creepy, crawly, friendly monster? If you were a unicorn, what color would you be? Here’s a chance for children to create their own world with masks, painting, music, and storytelling. Children will design their fantasy creatures such as playful dragons, wacky monsters — using a variety of materials, and then engage in inventive activities designed to free creative self-expression. Taught by Eliza Newman experienced 87Afterschool team member.

Jurassic and Jungle Adventures: Grades K-1

Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Put on your hiking boots and camouflage…you’re about to enter Jurassic Brick Land! Kids will build a world that comes to life, while learning about real dinosaurs in the process. In the second half of the term, kids will be building models of snakes, insects, mammals and more. Each week they will discuss fascinating facts about the animals they build. At the end of the term kids will take home a “Build Journal” with some build photos accompanied by their comments. Taught by Bricks 4 Kidz®NYC uses Lego® bricks and technologies to provide STEM enrichment to children. Note: $ 50 supplement fee

Judo: Grades: 1-2

(Beginner/Introductory) The study of this Olympic sport will build confidence and develop children’s self-awareness and physical fitness. Falling, tumbling, throwing, pinning, and escape techniques are taught. Judo uniforms are required; please see our website for information on where you can purchase. Sensei Robin Rosenthal, Black belt in Karate, Judo, Aikido, and Jujitsu, and seven times US Olympic Training Camp champion, has taught martial arts and self-defense to thousands of children, including at PS87, in more than 20 years of teaching Sensei.

Exploring the Museum: Grades 1-3

Explorations of rich cultural and scientific resources at the American Museum of Natural History, with follow-up projects and related activities. Students will visit a different gallery every other week and enjoy a variety of magical museum experiences. Led by experienced NYC teachers Mary Carson and Bernard Zwick.

Chef’s Corner (Gluten Free): Grades 1-2

(Healthy Cooking) Welcome to our Kitchen – we learn the basics to cooking. Delicious fruit smoothies, stir-fries and pasta, yummy snacks – we’ll make all this and more. Taught by Chef Cynthia, graduate of the French Culinary Institute educates kids on how to make healthy and delicious foods in NYC schools including PS87.

International Sports: Grades 1-3

Children will focus on teamwork, skill building, and learning the fundamentals of game play. This club builds upon those skills with cardio warm-ups, drills tailored to each sport and game play. Sports the children will be participating in: Baseball, Kickball, Soccer, Tennis, Team Handball, and much more. Don’t miss out on this exciting sports class! This club will be taught by BSNY, currently providing high quality programming in a number of schools such as, Friends Seminary, Cathedral Westside and Eastside, PS 3, and Dwight School, along with our 87Afterschool team. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged.

Minecraft Coding: Grades 3-5

Young programmers will have the opportunity to blur the lines of coding and virtualization with a custom educational version of Minecraft. By using the modified Minecraft known as ComputerCraftEDU, kids will be able to create their own programs using the coding language LUA. These programs can range from complex control for railway system, a wireless communication hub to operate all the functions of a farm, or even create a brand new game on a virtual computer within Minecraft itself. Led my team members from MakerState provides STEM instruction through NYC. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged.  

Building a Beat (DJing): Grades 2-5

This class instills digital technology skills and technology literacy and promotes an understanding of math and language usage, embedded in digital music production. Through learning the foundations of music making, students incorporate math concepts (fractions and multiples) and pattern recognition. Building Beats’ digital music production program is based on the principles of Connected Learning – which recognizes and leverages the power of Digital technology into students’ learning processes – and Design Thinking. Led by Building Beats, provides DJ and Music programs that teach entrepreneurial, leadership, and life skills to youth throughout NYC. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged.

Rising Stars (Yearlong Class): Grades 2-5

Children will experience the magic of live musical theatre, as they work year long towards a June 2017 production. Children will train in character and scene study, dance and choreography, vocal direction, and other stagecraft skills. All students will learn the power of working together as an ensemble, while gaining confidence individually. Director Reid Watson, musical director Kas Graves, choreographer Tyler Eley, and assistant director Kaitlyn Frotton are all working theatre professionals in Manhattan who will be staging Shining Star’s production! THIS CLASS WILL RUN UNTIL 5:30PM. Note: A $150 supplemental fee is charged.
