Junior Soccer Stars & Sports: Grades K Under the direction of experienced Coach Daniel who has taught sports at the JCC, BSNY, and schools such as Friends Seminary, and The Cathedral School, along with our 87Afterschool team. This class will develop soccer skills, endurance, strength, and flexibility through soccer activities. Students will play against each other in matches. Children will also explore a wide range of other sports throughout the term.
YogaKids: Grades K-2 This playful class encourages self-expression as well as building social skills. Children will strengthen their bodies as they learn how to focus through breathing and relaxation techniques. Class is also intended to Improve strength, flexibility, and coordination. Additionally they will learn self-respect and respect for others with the practice of fun and challenging poses. Ultimately, they will become Little Warriors. Jessie De La Rosa is a certified Jivamukti® Yoga instructor with 12 years of teaching experience. He has created & taught dynamic vinyasa classes for CRUNCH Fitness, Jivamukti Yoga School, and many other yoga centers/gyms in the city. Jessie placed 4th overall in ExerciseTV’s Top Trainer. Amongst his students he has Hollywood actors, pop singers, fashion designers and entrepreneurs.
Ballet Level I: Grades K-2 This class incorporates improvisation, creative visualization, and various dance styles as a means of tapping children’s unlimited potential. Children are introduced to basic steps and a variety of music as preparation for future study of dance. Ballet dance attire is worn. Professional dancer/choreographer L.Hassan Blandford will lead. He has been an instructor for the Department of Education for the past 15 years teaching ballet, contemporary, and modern dance styles to students in grades K-12. He has also served as director for the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) partnership with the Ailey School from 2008-2013.

Yummies Around the World (Gluten-Free): Grades 1-3 (World Culture/Cooking) Preparing international recipes is a wonderful activity that fosters understanding of other cultures as well as enjoyment of new culinary treats. Led by experienced 87Afterschool team members.
Krav Maga: Grades 2-5 Krav Maga was designed for the military. Krav Maga incorporates practical self-defense with training to improve agility, flexibility, core strength, ability to deal with pressure, and fast-paced analytical thinking. Krav Maga teaches kids to read and use body language, while maintaining situational awareness all while competing in coordination activities and obstacle courses. The class provides kids with a great way to relieve stress while learning valuable safety techniques and becoming healthy and fit. Krav Maga Centers of America will teach this class. They have been teaching this art in public schools in NYC for many years. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged.
Digital Hero Academy: Grades 2-5 Kids will work on iPads with stylists to gain skills, including the most important pillars of art such as composition, construction, perspective, and design. They will also explore the creative space of storytelling using examples from the most prolific names in the comic book industry, such as Bernie Wrigtson, Joe Kubert, and many others. This program will focus on blending traditional art techniques (primarily drawing), story building, and creative writing with the most cutting-edge digital techniques at our disposal. The class will be led by Ares Taveras, professional sequential artist and a graduate of the Joe Kubert School of Graphic Design and Cartooning.
Back Stage: Grades 2-5 Through creative exploration and artist discovery, students will learn the foundation of theatrical design and backstage procedures. This class will offer various prop-making techniques, stage and large-scale painting methods, and creating conceptual themes! All students will learn to collaborate with both Rising Star and Shining Star students and production staff as we help to apply our knowledge to the realized spring shows! Also, in addition to being the scenic designer of the Rising and Shining Star Productions, Maddie Bucci is a New York City freelance artist and scenic designer.
Fencing: Grades 2-5 This exciting class offers training in a centuries-old Olympic sport in a safe, creative environment. Certified instructors teach the basics of footwork, blade work, rules, and strategy, inspiring an appreciation of teamwork and sportsmanship as they challenge their students to learn to use their minds and bodies in creative and effective ways through games and exercises. Coaches include seasoned instructor/competitive fencer Justin Lokoussou.
Ballet Level II: Grades 3-5 This class will focus on students, alignment, technical approach/technique, and vocabulary. Students will also be introduced to multiple exercises combined, to create longer ballet combinations. Students will travel across the floor and execute this all with pre-recorded classical music. Lights, Camera, Action!: Grades 3-5 Learn how to make and act in a film with Take Two Film Academy. Students work together to create, act, shoot, direct, and edit their own short films. At the end of the term, students will have at least one film that they have made and posted online. Professional equipment, cameras, and editing software is provided. This is a great way for aspiring actors and directors to start learning this important new literacy. Take Two Film Academy is the first and foremost film school for kids dedicated to teaching young people video and media literacy. They serve kids throughout NYC, NJ, Long Island and Boston.
