Little Champions (Multi-Sports): Grade K

Children will focus on teamwork, skill building, and learning the fundamentals and structure of each assigned sport. This club builds upon those skills with cardio warmups, drills tailored to each sport, and game play. Sports the children will be participating in are Baseball, Kickball, Soccer, Tennis, Team Handball, Hockey, and much more. Don’t miss out on this exciting sports class! Coach Daniel who has taught sports at the JCC, BSNY, and schools such as Friends Seminary, and The Cathedral School, along with our 87Afterschool team will teach this club.

Amazing Toys & Stuff Factory: Grade K

Let’s see, what we can create with cardboard. Using MakeDo construction tools and bolts, we will create a wide range of projects such as toys, boats, structures, racing boxes, cardboard knights, guitars and so much more. Kids will have so much fun designing, building and finally taking them home to play with their creations in the Amazing Toy Factory—that they won’t realize they are building science, engineering, and math skills as they go!

Tiny Techies (Coding): Grade K -1

Tiny Techies leads kids through fun, playing and building-based games and games and projects in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Exploration and experimentation-based project in coding, robotics, physics, mechanics, alternative energy, 3D printing, geometry, and rocket science foster early interests in STEM and introductory skills lead to a lifelong love of STEM. This class will be led by experienced team members from MakerState, which provides STEM instruction throughout NYC. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged.

Word Wiz! Grade: K-1

This club will develop a love and respect for books as students participate in storytelling and develop reading through a variety of structured activities and individual projects, including creating their own books and journals. With the imagination and enthusiasm of our Library’s own Dawnica Conyette, you know kids will have a good time as well!

Color Explosion – Painting and Collage: Grades K-1

This objects based painting course explores the basics of brush use, acrylic versus tempera paint use, color theory, and object formation. We make it easy for kids to explore the artist in them by encouraging them to add their own voice and perspective through line and color. Through hands on projects (on canvas and paper), we will help kids develop the skills they need for future success- like critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity-through the joy of art. This class is led by experienced 87Afterschool team member, educator, and practicing sculptor, Kim Dacres.

KidChef Bakery: Grades 1-2

Children will discover fabulous culinary treats (mini pies and muffins to die for!) from around the world as they experience the hands-on enjoyment that comes in the preparation. Children will learn to read recipes, try new foods, and create old favorites to share. (If you thought pizza comes only from takeout, just wait until you learn to make your own from scratch!). Led by experienced 87Afterschool team members

Adventures in the City: Grades 1-2

Ice-skating, exploring new exhibits, media centers, Central Park, the zoo, the wax museum, or a special adventure designed just for you? Every week will be filled with adventure. There are wonderful opportunities for city adventures all over Manhattan, and we are ready to explore them! Note: A $75 supplemental fee is charged.

Totally Awesome Toy Factory: Grades 1-3

Let’s see, what do teachers Gloria Zwick and other Afterschool wizards have in store for visitors to Totally Awesome Toy Factory? How about a rubber band-propelled racecar, magic bubbles that can encase an entire child, fishing game that teaches math? Children will have so much fun playing with inventions in the Totally Awesome Toy Factory—and designing and creating their own toys and games, using materials readily available at home—that they won’t realize they are building science, engineering, and math skills as they go!

Olympic Judo: Grade 2-5

The study of this Olympic sport will build confidence and develop children’s self-awareness and physical fitness. Falling, tumbling, throwing, pinning, and escape techniques are taught. Judo uniforms are required; please see our website for information on where you can purchase. Sensei Robin Rosenthal, Black Belt in, Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, and Aikido, seven-time US Olympic Training Camp champion, has taught martial arts and self-defense to thousands of children. 

Chess for Tournament Players: Grades 1-5

Grouped by age and ability, players will build skills and strategies as they learn from experienced coaches. Instruction will include tournament play opportunities and resources to use at home. Teachers include PS87 Chess Instructor/Chess Masters Chris Williams. Note: Taught in small groups, “Chess Masters” is designed for experienced/advanced players with at LEAST one year of 87Afterschool chess or in-school instruction, or demonstrated tournament experience.  

Motors & Machines-Engineering Kidz: Grades 2-5

Students will think it, design it, and build it! Kids become inventors as they explore ideas, use a wide range of materials, and create their own projects. They will work with motors, batteries, and high-tech tools including 3D printers. Using STEM principles of science, engineering, technology and math, kids will make and take home their special projects. Children will be traveling to the Dazzling Discoveries studios on 108th Street and Columbus Avenue. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged. Public transportation will be used, and children will return to PS 87 around 5:15 PM. 

Witches, Wizards, and Wands: Grades 2-5

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Over the course of your semester at Hogwarts, students will delve into the magical world of Harry Potter. Wand making, chocolate frog eating, and Quidditch playing are among the many magical experiences students will have. Pairing snippets of the movies and books with creative exploration will reveal your true witch or wizard identity. Hogwarts alumna, Eliza Newman, will lead this class.

Pastry Arts: Grades 3-5

Shining Stars “Annie”: Grades 3-5 *Must re-register for spring term

An advanced class that requires commitment, students will be exposed to a professional audition process, acting both internally and externally, text analysis, and healthy dance technique, while working towards a June 2019 production, in which every performer is a shining star! It is encouraged that students have taken part in Rising Stars or have previous training in voice, acting, and dance, as this class requires students to put all three together. Director Tyler Eley, Musical Director Dominick Matsko, Choreographer Kaitlyn Frotton and Scenic Designer Maddie Bucci, are all working theatre professionals in Manhattan who will be staging Shining Star’s production! In the depths of the 1930’s, Annie is a fiery young orphan girl who must live in a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Miss Hannigan. Her seemingly hopeless situation changes dramatically when she is selected to spend a short time at the residence of the wealthy munitions industrialist, Oliver Warbucks. Note: A $150 supplemental fee is charged per TERM.

Survivor!: Grades 3-5

This is an outdoor adventure designed to teach basic outdoor skills. Kids learn the basic skills appropriate to the season by investigating and noting environmental conditions, personal navigation and how to identify edibles, stay warm and dry, maintain hydration and avoid dangers and develop an appreciation for the natural world. All classes are designed to be held outdoor regardless of weather. Please have your Survivors dress for the weather. Taught by Curious-on-Hudson. Note: A $50 supplemental fee is charged.
